The Brief

Parliament View Apartments are a stylish development of high end dwellings on the bank of the river Thames. The unitized construction comprises large performance glazed DGU’s designed to allow maximum light with reduced solar gain.

Due to the size and location of the units, failures in the units due to impact damage is a real possibility.

SGS have been called upon in an ongoing basis to investigate and rectify several breakages to the high level DGU’s.

SGS bespoke access solutions were required due to the remote high level location of the glazing. IRATA operatives and high level glazing engineers worked to co-ordinate the operation.

Due to the busy location in the City, a road closure was necessary in order to facilitate heavy lifting plant used in the operation. SGS logistics department liaised with TFL to obtain available dates for the road closure including necessary permits and licences, traffic managements and mandatory notices to residents etc

Truck mount access plus city crane lifting plan were utilized in order to safely convey glazing to and from the works face.

On completion of the works the affected glazing was water tested enabling the client to be issued with an extended guarantee.

The Brief

Givaudan, are a world leading famous brand in the production and creation of fragrances and personal care products used in everyday products throughout the world.

Their creative centre based in Ashford Kent required investigation and a condition report as the weatherproofing qualities of the overhead atrium was suspect in the face of several leaks which had appeared.

Our inspection revealed existing glazing and seals at the end of their serviceable lifespan. Furthermore the existing glazing had become opaque through degradation and lack of a cleaning regime.

The recommended works comprised a full replacement of all glazed units with a performance coated glass specification. This afforded the client with solar control (reducing internal head gain) whilst allowing much needed sunlight into the space. A full replacement of all caps and pressure plates and PPC aluminium flashings utilized.

SGS Limited have recently completed the full atrium upgrade of a structurally glazed overhead atrium in South East England.  Due to the extensive leak ingress issues, floor space below had been rendered unusable. SGS were tasked with initially inspecting system, water testing all areas and producing a full condition report.

Upon completion, the testing highlighted several major flaws with the glazed atrium. This included, primarily with severely dilapidated structural seals, far beyond there serviceable lifespan. With the information gathered from our tests, our technical team tailored a bespoke overhaul programme that would overcome design flaws and make use of the latest high quality, system compatible replacement components.

Implementation

As the high-level replacement works were being conducted on second floor, SGS HIGH LEVEL supplied an articulated truck mount with fully trained IPAF operator and qualified high-level technicians to carry out the replacement of the specialist double glazed units.

Access for the works were carried out through a combination of IRATA trained abseil glazing technicians and onsite man-safe system externally, in conjunction with a bespoke internal fixed scaffold system. After all works were completed, further tests were carried out and no signs of water ingress through the newly installed system components were discovered. A now watertight and fully serviceable glazed roof atrium was handed back to the client.

Specialist Glazing Solutions recently completed the specialist replacement of a defective point fixed double glazed unit in this West London Headquarters.

Prior to works commencing, our procurements team sourced the replacement glazing from a European manufacture overseeing the transportation and delivery process.

In order to facilitate the manoeuvre of the glazing, our team utilised our Rope Access Division and a specialist self-erecting crane with suction lifting equipment.

With the existing defective glazing removed, our team safely conducted the controlled installation of the replacement glazing handing over the site to a very happy client impressed by SGS High Level’s attention to safety and smooth running site.

Having carefully costed the works within a tender process SGS High Level Ltd were instructed by our client to carry out the full refurbishment of this famous old racecourse’s Polycarbonate Barrel Vault that had seen little maintenance since installation in 1990. Our scope of works encompassed the removal and replacement of all polycarbonate panels installing new bronze tinted UV clear polycarbonate.

Implementation

As well as replacing the polycarbonate, our works included the thorough preparation and redecoration of all associated cover capping, flashings, glazing bars and horizontal rails to both the external and internal surfaces. Using a specified primer and 2 coat gloss finish our redecoration team worked concurrently with the high level fitting teams to ensure all works were systematically phased and minimum disruption was caused to our client.

To complete the works we were tasked with supplying and installing a bespoke aluminium flashing detail to the full length of the rooflight/brickwork abutment. Specially fabricated and painted at our factory facility the flashing sections were pre-cut to ensure our onsite team could fit all materials in a methodical manner.

Specialist Glazing Solutions Ltd were called upon by our client to investigate severe leak ingress to the buildings sloped aluminium windows. After an initial inspection our surveying team identified a number of inherent defects to these windows that had combined to create severe leaks and condensation under rainfall.

To rectify leaks our proposal included the manufacture and installation of purpose designed weathering fins that would act has deflecting guards against wind driven rain, particularly on such an exposed façade. Utilising a polycarbonate product, our raked flashings were all cut to size to accurately fit each window and were mechanically fixed and silicone weathered to offer full defence against the elements.

Due to the buildings proximity to a busy town centre high street we utilised our specialist rope access division to safely conduct works. Working with local authorities in order to minimise disruption to the general public we installed manned cordoning at ground level in order to safeguard area below works and negated the need to use large and expensive plant.
